Fire claims Jackson Twp. barn

High winds forced flames through a barn in Jackson Township Monday afternoon.

The barn at 8505 W. CR 592 was owned by Todd Bowers, said Bob Dible, chief of Kansas Fire Department. The fire was reported around 12:15 pm Monday.

It is an older large barn, he said. They used to house animals in there.

Dible said he did not know the fires cause or where it started in the barn. He also did not have a damage estimate but said the barn was a loss. The building contained a boat and woodworking equipment, he said.

Its all destroyed, he said.

Dible said the barn already had fallen when firefighters arrived at the scene. Flames were coming out of windows, doors, all sides...

Auburn prepares for next crisis with emergency shelter guidelines

Selectmen unanimously voted on Monday to adopt new shelter and comfort station guidelines, following a presentation by Emergency Management Director Kenneth A. Holstrom.

He said the town had opened emergency shelters three times in the past year, with no official policy in place during the heat wave in July, Hurricane Irene in August and the early snowstorm in October.

Given the emergencies that we experienced during the past year and the challenges in opening and operating a shelter, it was crucial to develop a written plan and policies for shelter operations, Mr. Holstrom said.

Wayne Central wins 2012 Middle School Skills Competition

The Wayne Technical and Career Center hosted 275 eighth-grade students competing in the annual Middle School Skills Competition on March 30.

Wayne Central was the overall champion and Marion placed second. Students competed in 15 categories. First-place winners in each category were awarded a certificate, medallion and T-shirt.

Putting together giant architectural jigsaw puzzle

This was once a thriving commercial port, but the real use of the building was a mystery.

The Doddridge County Commission and Humane Society are working on a contract that would provide the Doddridge County Humane Society with funding in exchange for five kennel spaces at the new shelter.

The Animal Control Officer currently does not have a shelter to house animals and this would give the county some room for stray animals.

In exchange for a contract to house five dogs a year, we are going to allow them some money, funding for the year, said Shirley Williams, of the Doddridge County Commission.

The Humane Society shelter is not officially open yet, but the shelter is expected to open sometime this spring.
